DFW | April 2009 | Founders' Plaza

Started my afternoon out over at Founders' Plaza. Part of the afternoon they had the usual departure runway on the west side, 18L, closed for about an hour (again) and routed departing flights over to 18R which put them closer to Founders' Plaza.

Here's an American 757-200 rolling into position on 18R. This aircraft, N652AA, was built and delivered to American in August 1991 and was retrofitted with winglets in 2007.

Afternoon US Airways arrival from Phoenix, N669AW is an Airbus A320 built and delivered in April 2002 to America West and was repainted in November 2006 post-merger in US Airways colors.

I never really noticed the small stylized US flag logo on the wingtip fences before.

Close-up view of the arriving United A320 flight from Denver. It seems that every United Airbus that comes in now to DFW in the old blue/gray color scheme has part of its engine nacelles painted in the newer blue color. This aircraft, N846UA, was built and delivered to United in September 2001.

Nice to catch this bird again, this time on landing on a sunny day from Seattle! This Alaska Airlines 737-800 has special lei markings to commemorate Alaska's services to Hawaii. Amazing to think that from the first short-haul 737-100s/200s that first flew in the 1960s that the latest versions of the 737 are flying from the mainland to Hawaii! N577AS was built and delivered to Alaska Airlines in March 2007.

A rather unusual angle on an American 767-300 from Founders' Plaza- the heat haze wasn't so good but I thought it to be a unique shot, so posted it up anyway. Sometimes the northwest hold pad fills up with aircraft lining up for departure and on occasion the tower will ask one or two of the aircraft to cross 18L and do a 180 degree turn and wait in position opposite the northwest hold pad. That's what this American 767-300 was doing. I believe this departure is headed for South America, but not sure.

This aircraft, N346AN, is a 767-300ER built and delivered to American in May 2003.

It's always nice to catch a classic DC-9 and more so in a color scheme that is fast fading from the skies after the Delta acquisition of Northwest. Not to mention this old but sturdy birds have a ton of history behind them with long careers with other airlines.

This particular aircraft is no exception. It even wears its original registration number- N1309T, it's a DC-9-30 built and delivered in December 1968 to Texas International. It then went to New York Air (after Frank Lorenzo formed New York Air as a union-busting operation) and then got folded into Continental as Lorenzo consolidated his Texas Air empire. It then got sold to Northwest where it's still going strong- for those interested, it happens to be the 439th DC-9 ever built........
